Netflix’s Best Vegan Documentaries You Have to Watch

Is there anything better than jumping onto the sofa and Netflix and chillin’ with a pint of vegan ice cream on your lap? Nope, of course there isn’t. As one of the largest streaming services in the world, there’s no doubt about the fact that Netflix has oodles of television shows, movies, and documentaries to its name. Within that documentary category lies an impressive selection of programmes that focus on the vegan lifestyle. They follow everything from the health to the ethical sides of veganism, and they have proven to be pretty popular over the years. In fact, these documentaries have often been the reason why meat-eaters have chosen to ditch animal products forever. So, if you’re in need of a little vegan entertainment, then you should definitely check out these vegan documentaries on Netflix.

Forks Over Knives (2011)

If you’re looking for the science and the research to back up a plant-based diet, then look no further. Forks Over Knives was released in 2011, and it gave new and potential vegans the chance to really learn about what they were putting into their bodies before they made the conscious choice to change.

That’s because this documentary focuses on the processed and junk-like food that meat-eaters put into their bodies on a regular basis, and how it affects their health in a negative way. In fact, the nutritionists within this documentary go as far as to state that switching to a plant-based diet will help to ward off diseases that plague our world.

The Game Changers (2019)

Well, what can we say about this one? The Game Changers documentary really has been a game-changer, as it has forced many people to question what they’re eating and what it’s doing to their body. That’s because this documentary focuses largely on the health aspects of veganism, and rather than utilising the knowledge of boring ol’ professors and nutritionists, this documentary actually follows some of the most famous athletes in the world.

Yep, we’re talking about Lewis Hamilton, Arnold Schwarzenegger, and James Wilks. All of these athletes showcase their own success in transitioning to a plant-based diet, and they try to dispel some of the myths surrounding vegan food, strength, muscle definition, and more. What could be better than that?

Earthlings (2005)

Although Earthlings is much older than some of the other documentaries on this list, it’s no less important. Released in 2005, this documentary was created by Shaun Monson but narrated by the legendary Joaquin Phoenix – who has been a vegan for much of his life. This film delves into the role of humans on planet Earth, and how we have used the likes of pets, animals, entertainment, and clothing to our advantage.

It uses camera footage obtained behind-the-scenes at some of the largest companies in the world, and how we have all come to use animals as our playthings. The aim of the documentary is to make humans realise that we’re not able to use these animals in such a way – and it does a pretty good job of it.

Cowspiracy: The Sustainability Secret (2014)

If you haven’t seen Cowspiracy: The Sustainability Secret yourself, then there’s a high chance that you’ve heard of it. That’s because this movie has certainly caused a stir over the years, for both positive and negative reasons. While many people have discredited the movie for being a little too extreme, there’s no doubt about the fact that it’s got people talking about veganism and the problems with factory farming within the meat industry.

That’s because it’s the main focus of this documentary, and it offers behind-the-scenes videos, photos, and stories of the animals who have fallen victim to this consumer-driven industry. While some people have had to turn this one off because of its graphic nature, it’s a good one to watch if you really want to put your lifestyle choice into perspective.

What the Health (2017)

After the success of Cowspiracy, the makers of this documentary decided to go one step further and add another creation into the mix. This came in the form of What the Health, and while it still promoted a vegan diet, this documentary focused more on the positive health aspects of veganism rather than the practices used to put meat on the table.

More importantly, it focused on the billions of dollars that can be found within the realm of fast food, pharmaceuticals, and other businesses that feed off the people who eat meat and other animal products. Alongside this, it also claims that those who eat a plant-based lifestyle are healthier – and they have the cold, hard facts to back it up.

So, are you up for a lazy Sunday of Netflix documentaries? We have a feeling that these vegan documentaries on Netflix will be right up your street.
