With best-dressed and worst-dressed lists making their way around the globe, stylists and celebrities often feel under immense pressure to find the perfect red carpet looks that will blow everyone away. This often means that the outfit is completely new and never been seen before, it’s made from the most impressive and most expensive fabrics, and it might have even been flown across the globe on its very own plane. These aren’t exactly eco-friendly, but all is not lost. With more and more celebs becoming conscious of their wardrobe, these red carpet looks will go down in history as some of the best eco-friendly red carpet outfits of all time.
Gisele Bündchen – 2018 Met Gala
Although many people believe that Gisele Bündchen is the kind of supermodel who loves to be surrounded by luxurious and expensive things, they would probably be surprised to learn that she’s actually a huge advocate for eco-friendly living. As a lover of the environment, she has made countless changes in her life to create a better future for her children – and this involves her outfit choices.
When Gisele stepped onto the red carpet at the 2018 Met Gala, fans were blown away by the fact that she looked like a literal goddess in her gold dress. What made her even more of a goddess, however, was the fact that this Versace dress was actually made from organic silk and cotton that was certified by the Global Organic Textile Standard. She also made sure that the zipper was completely colourant-free and that the material was dyed using natural ingredients. Could she be any cooler?
Naomie Harris – 2013 Oscar Awards
If you look at Naomie Harris at the 2013 Oscar Awards and immediately think of flowing lava and boiling hot volcanoes, then we have a feeling that designer Michael Badger would be pretty happy. That’s because Michael – who was mentored by Vivienne Westwood, as you do – wanted to create a sense of heat within this outfit. There’s no doubt about the fact that this is exactly what we got, and there’s also no doubt about the fact that he did the world of sustainable fashion proud.
That’s because Naomie’s dress was actually made using organic silk that was then dyed using two completely natural ingredients. As if this wasn’t enough to make you fall in love with it, the dyed fabric was then embroidered with the likes of old sweet wrappers, vintage beads and zippers that had been recycled from other garments!
Jane Fonda – 2020 Oscar Awards
Let’s have a round of applause for Jane Fonda, people. Although she could live out the rest of her days exploiting her celebrity status and her wealth, Jane has instead decided to devote her life to helping the planet and the future of the human race. Not only has she been arrested on numerous occasions for protesting against climate change, but she has also become an advocate for sustainable fashion.
Instead of buying a brand new dress for the 2020 Oscar Awards, Jane opted to follow the theme of the night and recycle one of her old dresses instead. The actress and legend first wore this red Elie Saab gown back in 2014, and she realised that it was about time that she dusted it off and gave it another whirl. Clothes don’t just want to be worn once and then shoved to the back of your wardrobe, you know.
Julianne Moore – 2018 Cannes Film Festival
Is there anything that Julianne Moore can’t do? Although we just assumed that we couldn’t love her any more, it seems as though Julianne is also a great advocate for the environment and loves to incorporate sustainable fashion into her wardrobe. As someone who attends countless award ceremonies and events on a regular basis, this actress needs to find photo-ready outfits that will take the world by storm.
Although it seems as though Julianne loves to wear a new dress every time she attends these events, she ensures that her footprint on this planet is as small as possible. At the 2018 Cannes Film Festival, Julianna not only wore a sustainable dress, but she also made sure that her accessories also fit the bill. Her rings and necklace were bought from Chopard’s Journey to Sustainable Luxury collection, a collection that ethically mines and sources its jewels. What could be cooler than that?
Lupita Nyong’o – 2016 Met Gala
Lupita Nyong’o is a pretty big deal, right? This actress has truly made her mark over the past few years, and it seems as though everyone loves to see her attend the prestigious award ceremonies that the celebrity world has to offer. Thankfully, she did just that in 2016 when she was invited to attend the Met Gala. While all eyes were certainly on her hair, there’s no doubt about the fact that all eyes were also on her beautiful gown.
This silver and green ensemble transformed the actress into a mermaid, but it seems as though it wasn’t just its appearance that made it pop. That’s because this Calvin Klein dress was actually made to be as eco-friendly as possible. In fact, hers was one of three eco-friendly Calvin Klein looks to make their way into the Met Gala that evening. It’s one of our favourite eco-friendly red carpet looks – ever!
Elizabeth Banks – 2020 Oscar Awards
Everyone knows who Elizabeth Banks is, right? Whether you know her as an actress or a filmmaker, it’s fair to say that she has been in the business for a long time. This has allowed her the chance to attend countless award ceremonies and celebrity events, and this has meant that she has had to wear some seriously expensive dresses.
However, fed up with wearing a dress and then storing it in her wardrobe for it never to be worn again, Elizabeth decided to recycle one of the dresses she wore years ago. In fact, this red Badgley Mischka can be traced back to 2004 when she attended the very first Vanity Fair Oscars Party. Although we know that this dress was recycled, we think it looks just as good as the day she wore it for the first time. After all, who really cares?
Emma Watson – Met Gala 2016
Although it’s pretty strange to see Hermione Granger without her Hogwarts robes on, there’s no doubt about the fact that this leading lady is a total stunner. As well as being an incredible actress, she has also dedicated her time and platform to helping out some major causes, including female rights and climate change.
Alongside this, Emma is also a huge advocate for sustainable fashion, and she has made sure that all of her clothes have been beneficial to the environment in recent years. This could be seen when she attended the prestigious Met Gala event in 2016. Although we were pretty annoyed that our invite obviously got lost in the post, we were happy to see that Emma’s incredible Calvin Klein gown was made completely from recycled water bottles. Pretty cool, huh?
Sophie Turner – 2016 Oscar Awards
Sophie Turner may have won over our hearts due to her role in Game of Thrones, but it seems as though she won it all over again in 2016 when she walked the red carpet at the Oscar Awards. The young actress always knows how to make an entrance, and there’s no doubt about the fact that her grey Galvan gown took everyone’s breath away.
The muted colour just accentuated her fiery red hair even more, and the subtle accessories really showed off the dress itself. Of course, we’re not just here to talk to you about how beautiful Sophie Turner looked on this occasion. We’re also here to talk about sustainable fashion because Sophie’s dress was made entirely out of organic silk! There’s no tea here because that was a smart move.
Joaquin Phoenix – 2020 Oscar Awards
We dare you to try and find something you don’t like about Joaquin Phoenix. Go on, we dare you! This incredible actor has made no secret of the fact that he tries to live as sustainably as possible, and instead of attending any fancy after-parties after the 2020 Oscar Awards, Joaquin instead decided to head home with Rooney Mara and eat a vegan burger instead!
As if that wasn’t cool enough, this actor’s outfit choice for the event also went down with eco-friendly fans across the globe. That’s because Joaquin decided that he didn’t need a new suit for every single event during the awards season. He was given his handsome Stella McCartney suit at the beginning of the season, and he has since been wearing the same one for every single event. This is the change we love to see in the world.
Padma Lakshmi – 2018 Emmy Awards
Could Padma Lakshmi look any more fabulous if she tried? We think not. Although this woman already has more jobs than we could count on her resume, it seems as though this author, television presenter, activist, and so much more decided to add “Sustainability Warrior” to the end of it as well.
That’s because she used the 2018 Emmy Awards to make a true statement and to show young men and women across the world that they don’t have to have a giant closet full of clothes that they only wear once before shoving to the back of the wardrobe. So, she chose to re-wear a red dress she had worn previously, and those who keep up to date with her events will know that she actually wore it to the 2017 Vogue India’s Women of the Year Awards. The J.Mendel dress was stunning, so why wouldn’t she wear it again?
Anne Hathaway – 2017 Colossal Movie Tour
Anne Hathaway is kind of a big deal, right? This actress has starred in some of the biggest movies known to Hollywood, and there’s no doubt about the fact that she has been able to build up an impressive fan base. Amazingly, Anne has used her platform to promote social issues that she believes in, and lucky for us sustainable fashion is one of them.
During her 2017 press tour for the movie Colossal, the actress decided that she would not wear dresses that were made specifically for each event. Instead, she recycled old looks, she bought dresses from flea markets, and she even wore vintage gowns. This particular black dress was from Armani’s 2006 collection, which means that she didn’t have to watch a perfectly beautiful dress go to waste after it was worn once. Yep, that’s the Anne we know and love!
Cate Blanchett – 2018 Cannes Film Festival
Dressing sustainably isn’t always about using recycled materials and turning something that was once deemed rubbish into something beautiful. There are so many different ways to dress sustainably, and it seems as though the one and only Cate Blanchett just loves to recycle her old clothes and wear them time and time again.
While this was once a complete no-no in the world of celebrity fashion, more and more people are coming around to the idea of wearing these designer garments more than once – and about time, too! At the 2018 Cannes Film Festival, this actress decided that it would be “ridiculous” for her to wear a completely new outfit when she had so many in her closet that had only been worn once, so she re-wore the black lace dress she wore to the 2014 Golden Globes.
Saoirse Ronan – 2020 Oscar Awards
Unless you’ve been living under a rock for the past few years, you’ll know that Saoirse Ronan is the woman of the moment. This young actress seems to have taken the world by storm with her talent and her beauty, and the Irish actresses hard work paid off when she was given the chance to attend the 2020 Oscar Awards as a nominee!
The actress was nominated for her role in Little Women, and she knew that she would have to make her mark on the red carpet. However, the 2020 Oscar Awards were also focused on sustainability, and Ronan is all about that life. Instead of wearing a completely new dress, the black section of her dress was actually recycled from the gown that she wore at the BAFTA Awards just a week earlier. We’ve gotta reduce, reuse, and recycle, after all.
Lily Cole – 2016 Oscar Awards
Let’s be honest; you’ve probably seen Lily Cole before. After all, she’s a hugely famous supermodel, and it seems as though she’s been the face of countless campaigns and photoshoots. While Lily is dressed head-to-toe in different designers on a regular basis, the model likes to ensure that she is dressing as sustainably as possible when she gets the chance to choose her own clothing.
When she received her invite to the 2016 Oscar Awards, she knew that she needed to make a statement with her dress – so she utilized the skills of Vivienne Westwood and the designer’s love of the environment. Yes, this silver gown was made entirely from recycled plastic bottles, and it’s amazing to think that the bottles she wore could have ended up at the landfill taking hundreds of years to decompose.
Margot Robbie – 2016 Met Gala
If we had the chance to transform ourselves into another celebrity, it would definitely be Margot Robbie. She’s just so perfect in every way, isn’t she? Not only is she an incredible actress, but she’s also funny, beautiful, and an advocate for the environment. Margot proved her love for eco-friendly fashion when she attended the 2016 Met Gala when she teamed up with famous designer Calvin Klein to create something magical.
While this white cut-out dress seemed simple, its flowing design and its figure-hugging aspects matched up to her aesthetic perfectly – and we kinda want to borrow it. The dress itself was made from organic silk, and then all of the accents, such as the zippers and the cutouts, utilized recycled plastic to get the job done. We have to say it was pretty incredible.
Zoey Deutch – 2018 Oscar Awards
While most people know Zoey Deutch for her love of pantsuits, that doesn’t mean that she doesn’t love to don a gown for specific events. At the 2018 Oscar Awards, the actress made the decision to take part in the Red Carpet Green Dress Challenge – an initiative that aims to make celebrities really think about their outfits and where they are coming from.
In order to keep her look as sustainable as possible, Zoey dug up a vintage Elie Saab gown complete with vintage beads and sequins. This meant that she didn’t have to buy a dress specifically for the event, and it didn’t have to be made for the actress specifically. If she wants to hand this down now that she’s worn it to the Oscars, we would happily take it off her hands and give it a new home…
Kaitlyn Dever – 2020 Oscar Awards
Kaitlyn Dever may be a relatively new addition to the Hollywood award ceremony scene, but there’s no doubt that her first few appearances on the red carpet have been pretty epic. That’s because this young actress has wanted to make a statement, and one of those statements involves sustainable clothing.
Although these red carpet looks normally come attached to a huge designer or fashion house, this Louis Vuitton gown wasn’t like any other on the red carpet. That’s because the brand made sure that the custom-made outfit was made using eco-responsible materials that wouldn’t harm the environment. To top off her outfit, Kaitlyn bought herself a pair of $47 heels from a climate-neutral footwear brand. Yep, we think we’ve found our new favourite person.
While many people thought that celebs didn’t think about the environment or sustainable fashion, these eco-friendly red carpet looks show us that this isn’t the case. These guys are just too cool.
